You gots to spell that shit out!

Destroying mosques in the approved manner: The new Osprey helicopter gunship hovers over a mosque with the slogan 'It descends from the heavens. Ironically it unleashes hell.' The pleonastic use of the word 'ironically' is proof that American advertisers believe Americans to be too stupid to know this themselves.

Proof at last, and in sobering black and white too. It will hardly come as a surprise to most intelligent commentators, but let this tasteless advertisement put an end to all further speculation. It simply doesn’t matter what the Bush administration says, now we know for sure: Americans don’t get irony. So if you want to use it in an ad campaign for your evil clients, you better speak slowly and let America in on your fancy-pants joke.

I’m relieved, because it was in danger of becoming some sort of cliché. Hoar was beginning to accumulate on the aged chestnut. And no-one wanted that, Ed Byrne least of all. Ed made his stand-up comedy name with his fun-for-all-the-family kicking of Alanis Morissette’s ironically non-ironic song called “Ironic” (laugh with Ed).

As they say in the helicopter gunship trade: “It is a traditional and substantially untrue joke about Americans. Ironically she comes from Canada.”
